VDT+ thermometer offers precise control in optical fibre manufacturing

Land, a subsidiary of AMETEK, has introduced a new non-contact infrared thermometer called the Land Vapour Deposition Thermometer (VDT+) for precise measurement and control during optical fibre manufacturing deposition processes.

The VDT+ is a stand-alone thermometer designed for use in the burner zone where deposition occurs, where precise control is crucial for determining fibre strength and quality.

It uses a specific wavelength in the 5µm region, where glass is opaque and interferences from atmospheric gases and combustion products are minimal.

The thermometer is fully focusable, with a narrow 100:1 field of view for precise optical alignment. Its rugged and modular design ensures it can withstand harsh environments.

The VDT+ is the industry standard, with a 4-20mA output suitable for all process monitoring, recording, and control systems.

Individually calibrated thermometers are available with traceability to National Standards and UKAS or NIST calibration certificates.

Derek Stuart, Global Product Manager, from Land said: "The VDT+ builds on our long-established VDT thermometer to deliver a powerful tool for accurate and reliable temperature measurements in optical fibre preforms and other hot glass applications. It does not require an external processor and can easily be configured using the built-in web server."
