Nama PWP signs 3,500 MW PPAs with Oman power generators

Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP) is set to sign new power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Oman’s leading power generators, including Al Suwadi, Al Batinah, and Phoenix Power, for three gas-fired independent power projects (IPPs) totalling 3,500 MW.

These agreements will extend the plants’ operational lives by 15 years after their current contracts expire. Phoenix Power, backed by AXIA Power, operates a 2,000 MW plant in Sur, while Al Suwadi and Al Batinah, both supported by Engie, run 745 MW plants in Barka and Suhar.

Al Suwadi and Al Batinah received letters of award in March, with PPAs commencing April 1, 2028.

The agreements, running until 2043, provide long-term revenue visibility, reinforce partnerships with Nama PWP, and align with the companies’ strategies in Oman.

Nama PWP’s 2028–2029 procurement programme aims to ensure reliable electricity supply by keeping efficient plants operational as older units retire and new renewable capacity comes online.

The PPAs also enhance cost efficiency, support grid stability amid growing renewable penetration, and provide operational flexibility during Oman’s energy transition.
