Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) said it has completed 53 per cent of the work at M-Station, the largest power production and water desalination plant being built in the emirate at a cost of Dh11.6 billion ($3.15 billion).

The M-Station project was launched in 2013 at a cost of Dh10.15 billion. This included an estimated Dh6.2 billion towards boosting electricity output to 2,060 MW through six Siemens (F) model gas turbines with a capacity of 234 MW each, six heat recovery steam turbine generators, and three back-pressure steam turbines with a capacity of 218 MW each.

Mott MacDonald is the consultancy company for the project, which is set to be completed and delivered by end of April 2018.

According to Dewa, the estimated cost of the expansion project has been put at Dh1.47 billion. It will include setting up of new power generation units with a capacity of 700 MW to be added to the current capacity of the station to eventually produce 2,760 MW by 2018.

Its current total capacity is 2,060 MW of electricity and 140 million gallons of water per day (mgpd).

Dewa pointed out that the station adopts the highest levels of availability, reliability, and efficiency, using the most advanced technologies in the world. It has successfully completed 3.9 million safe man-hours without any injuries.
