Background
Block 70 occupies a broad area of 639 sq km and is an onshore block in Oman that includes the shallow undeveloped Mafraq heavy oil field.
The block is located in the middle of the prolific and oil producing Ghaba Salt Basin in the central part of the Sultanate. The Mafraq oil field, within block 70, contains significant amounts of oil and previous and extensive pump tests have proven the productivity of the area.
The field is estimated by third parties to contain between 185 and 280 million barrels of original oil in place. The productive reser-voir is shallow, at approximately 430 meters below the ground level. Block 70 is covered by both 2D and 3D seismic data that has been acquired by previous operators (PDO).
Project Scope
The scope of work includes geological and geophysical studies, reprocess of 3D seismic, the drill of appraisal pilot wells to evalu-ate oil quantity, and production of heavy oil in Mafraq Field.
Project Status
As of November 2022, two pilot wells have shown positive results in the form of oil discovery. Production test of the wells will begin once the transportation and processing agreements are approved by the government. A third production test well is being prepped for spudding.
