Taiwan consumed 775,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil products in September, down 7.8 per cent from a year earlier, as reduced power generation, higher gasoline prices and lower diesel consumption by fishermen weighed.

Fuel oil consumption dropped 5.8 per cent to 103,000 bpd after output at fuel-fired power plants dropped by almost 30 per cent from the same month last year, according Reuters calculations based on data by the Bureau of Energy's Web site.
Seeking to cut costs, the state-run Taiwan Power Co cut back use of expensive fuel oil and natural gas and boosted output at its nuclear plants by 13.6 per cent compared to last year and 5 percent at its coal-fired plants, according to Taipower's Web site.
Slightly cooler weather in September compared to the same time last year cut the island's overall electricity generation by 0.1 per cent from the same time last year and almost 10 per cent from August, data provided by the energy bureau said.
