Background

Al Shaheen field is one of the world’s largest oil fields and is located in block 5 offshore northern Qatar. The field is operated under a production sharing agreement on behalf of Qatar Petroleum. Current production from the field is around 40 per cent of Qatar’s crude oil, at around 300,000 barrels per day. Maersk Oil has been operating the Al Shaheen field for 25 years while being in a production sharing agreement with Qatar Petroleum, which will be expiring on July 2017. By the end of Maersk Oil’s production sharing contract with Qatar Petroleum, Total will be taking over the Al Shaheen field operations and possess 30 per cent stake in the project. The existing development consists of 30 platforms and 300 wells.

 

Project status

March 2017: Supply disruptions at Al Shaheen field are expected to last until April 2017 due to loading delays.

 

Project scope

Scope of work comprised of the ff:

• Drilling of some 40 new production wells

• 20 new water injection wells

• Conversion of 14 existing wells to water injection

• Construction and installation of new production platforms, interconnected with pipelines,

• Facilities for gas compression

• A gas export pipeline to Qatar Petroleum’s North Field Alpha platform, offshore Qatar

• A number of appraisal wells will be drilled to evaluate possible further production potential.

 

Project finance

This project client is Qatar Petroleum, who has operated the field jointly with Maersk Oil since 1992. The current agreement for Maersk Oil expires in mid-2017 and the field development has been under advisement for open tender of new concession holder since Q2 2015. In June 2016, France’s Total has been chosen and will now possess 30 per cent stake to operate the Al Shaheen Offshore project.
