Background

Al Shaheen is one of the world's largest oilfields and is located offshore in Block 5, north of Qatar. The field produces around 40 per cent of Qatar's crude oil, at around 300,000 barrels per day. Maersk Oil operated the field for 25 years in a production sharing agreement with Qatar Petroleum. The agreement expired on July 2017. It will then be taken over by Total, which will possess 30 per cent stake in the project.

Project Status

Jan 2020: Sembcorp Marine has been awarded the EPC contract for Phase 2. The scope of work includes fabricating two wellhead platforms for the project that will be bridge-linked to the field's existing facilities.

Project Scope

Work on the project will be carried out in three phases. Phase 1 includes three wellhead jackets each weighing 1,200 tonnes and piles weighing around 1,000 tonnes. The scope of work in Phase 2 consists of two new wellhead platforms each weighing at least 1,800 tonnes, a connecting bridge, and brownfield work on an offshore development. Phase 3 will see construction of three new wellhead platforms.

Project Finance

After the agreement between Qatar Petroleum and Maersk Oil expired in mid-2017, Total took over with 30 per cen stake in June 2016. In July 2017, Qatar petroleum and Total through a joint venture created North Oil Company (NOC) to operate the Al Shaheen offshore field. Qatar Petroleum has 70 per cent stake.
