KUWAIT PETROLEUM Corporation (KPC) is a multifaceted company that cares for the environment and accords top priority to social responsibility wherever it conducts its business.
In many parts of the world, KPC is the sole representation of the State of Kuwait, which deepens its resolve to raise the name of Kuwait on the local and international levels.
It has sponsored the most important marine environmental project in Kuwait - Jaber Al-Kuwait Reefs - and more specifically the Grand Reserve of Bnaidar. The marine reserve is still viewed as a major national voluntary project for the creation of an underwater national park and development of settlements for coral reefs, fish and other sea creatures.
The project was overseen by the Kuwait Dive Team, which had created 19 artificial reserves for coral reefs and fish. The reefs were made from concrete and weighed 900 tonnes. They were placed on the seabed at particular depths that are suitable for different species and included 6,500 holes, which were designed to act as shelters for fish and various marine creatures.
The main reasons for creating artificial reserves in Kuwait are the lack of favourable factors for the building up of natural coral reefs, the limited area and distribution of the existing reefs and the natural and human destruction of the reefs. Coral reefs are very important because not only do they provide a shelter for fish and other marine creatures, but they are also one of the most important links in the marine food chain and serve as a store of nutrition for the seas. They also represent a national and touristic wealth while constituting aquatic natural gardens made of marine materials.
Besides providing a suitable environment for the growth of corals and for the settlement of fish, it is hoped that the Bnaidar reserve will attract amateur divers and raise their awareness as they watch the growth of the coral reefs and reduce the impact of divers' presence on the natural coral reefs.
In conjunction with KPC and its subsidiaries' concern to preserve the marine environment, protect marine life and curb all forms of marine pollution, the company launched a campaign to clean Kuwait's beaches and islands in co-operation with Dive Caroline, several private companies, as well as schools.
This beach clean-up campaign witnessed the participation of 160 children, aged from six to eight years, from six different schools. Involving children in this kind of campaign is the first such initiative supported by KPC, and falls within the framework of the company's efforts in raising environmental awareness among all social groups.
By allowing the participation of children in the cleaning campaign, KPC aims at implanting the right social values in the children's minds and raising their awareness of the importance of preserving the environment.
The campaign also included cleaning the islands of Kubbar, Qaruh and Um Al Maradem with the participation of volunteer divers.
KPC plays an active role in supporting educational programmes aimed at training young Kuwaitis and honing their skills through practical experience. It recently sponsored the 'Be Ambitious' project, organised by the National Union of Kuwaiti Students at Kuwait University.
The maiden project provided on the job training opportunities and summer jobs to all participants as a preparatory step for their professional careers. The participants were given work placements in private sector companies and establishments in the fields relevant to their specialisations. At the end of the exercise, every student received a financial reward and a certificate of experience.
KPC also sponsored a summer programme organised by the Touristic Enterprises Company to employ high school students. This sponsorship was in line with the KPC's desire to support all social activities that serve Kuwaiti society and help young Kuwaitis spend their free time in constructive work. The Corporation's support of the project was a national initiative aimed at raising a generation able to carry out its future duties.
KPC believes that investing in the young people of Kuwait, the real wealth of the country, is a real investment that boosts and develops students' capabilities, skills and sense of responsibility in a practical and professional manner alongside the academic education they receive at school.
Pursuant to its mission of raising awareness of the Kuwaiti oil industry, KPC organised a series of intensive lectures for Kuwait University students on the nature and the role of the Corporation in the management of the oil sector activities through its subsidiary oil companies. The lectures also included a detailed explanation of KPC's goals and introductions to its business, to its subsidiaries and to the activities undertaken by it.
In order to promote the oil culture among Kuwaiti youth and reinforce the social bonds among children of the KPC employees, the Department of Public Relations organised a visit to the Kuwait Oil Company exhibition in Ahmadi. The trip included a documentary film on the widespread destruction during the Iraqi invasion and occupation of Kuwait, in particular, the torching of the oilwells, and included scenes of the heroic acts of the Kuwaiti teams, which brought the fires under control.
KPC annually sponsors a diving trip, organised by the Sea Sports Club under the auspices of the Emir, Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, to commemorate the traditional occupations of Kuwaiti ancestors.
This event reinforces the spirit of belonging and the sense of loyalty to the country. Through the international operations carried out by its subsidiary companies such as Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (Kufpec), KPC seeks to build and maintain friendly relations with host states and to leave a mark, which is testimony to the extent of its co-operation with these states.
Kufpec has launched a number of charitable enterprises to help the Pakistani people. The company has built and financed two medical clinics in the Kerthar region of Pakistan. They provide basic medical services to the local people, as well as training for young girls to enable them to work in such clinics and earn a regular income. KPC also grants scholarships to Pakistani students allowing them to study in the University of Karachi. Kufpec has also built several schools in the Syram' field and in the Paula region of Indonesia in order to spread education and provide better living conditions for the local population. The company equipped the schools, appointed qualified teachers and covers all the expenses. The schools provide free education to the local children and employment for the local labour force.
Kufpec has contributed to the construction of a huge mosque with a distinctive architectural style that stands out as a prominent landmark in the capital. The mosque is highly appreciated by both the government and the people of Tunisia.
