L&T taps West Asia for mega power orders

Kahramaa has awarded a $20-million<br> contract to L&T

ENGINEERING and construction major Larsen and Toubro has bagged four orders from Qatar, the UAE and Oman totalling Rs1,044 crore ($217.45 million) for construction of electrical substations for clients such as the Qatar Petroleum, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) and Oman Electricity and Transmission Company (OETC).

These EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) projects will be executed by the Electrical and Gulf Projects Operating Company, which is part of L&T’s Construction Division.

An order worth Rs737 crore ($153.45 million) is from Qatar Petroleum for the construction of four substations, 132kV cabling, 33 kV and 11 kV power distribution including telecom and network development at Ras Laffan.

The order is scheduled for completion in 32 months. This project is one of the key phases of the overall development of Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar.

Another contract for Rs 96 crore ($20 million) is from Kahramaa for setting up a 66/11 kV gas insulated substation (GIS) at Education City, Doha.

L&T is already constructing five such substations at Doha.

L&T has also secured a Rs115-crore ($24 million) order from Dewa, UAE, for a 132/11 kV GIS at Dubai.

Two such substations are being built there by L&T. L&T’s joint venture company (L&T Oman) has bagged a Rs 96-crore ($20 million) order from OETC for construction of a 132/33 kV GIS substation in the Nakhal area, Oman.
