The Korean Register (KR) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI), UK-based BAR Technologies, and the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR) to jointly develop a 174K LNG carrier equipped with WindWings® wind-assisted propulsion technology.
The agreement establishes a joint development project to evaluate the technical feasibility, safety, and operational performance of integrating rigid wing sails onto gas carriers as global maritime operators align with tightening decarbonisation mandates.
The engineering framework focuses on a novel HD HHI vessel concept featuring a forward accommodation block positioned toward the bow.
This structural reconfiguration creates additional upper deck area required to install BAR Technologies’ large wing sails without compromising cargo capacity or operational access.
By harnessing wind as supplementary propulsion, the design reduces reliance on main propulsion machinery, lowers fuel consumption, and cuts greenhouse gas emissions.
HD HHI leads the basic vessel design, while BAR Technologies supplies specifications, structural strength analyses, operational guidelines, and fuel savings projections derived from its existing fleet deployments on bulkers and tankers.
KR and LISCR will conduct safety assessments and technical evaluations against classification rules and flag state standards, with KR targeting an Approval in Principle (AIP) upon successful review completion.
The initiative demonstrates how combining alternative propulsion mechanics with advanced hull arrangements can provide shipowners with practical, compliance-ready solutions for next-generation gas transport assets.
