Saudi Arabia's Diamond Era

Proving its metal in tanks

Capt Ahmed Al-Tabei

AL-ZAMIL Metal Works Factory (AZMWF), well known in Saudi Arabia for the design, supply and manufacture of steel products including pressure vessels and other  associated piping products has taken big strides to upgrade and modernise its fabrication factory.

Located in Jeddah Industrial Area Phase 5 and spread over an area of 50,000 sq m, AZMWF facility is now an ISO 9001:2000 certified and it has also got ASME for pressure vessels ‘U’ and ‘R’. The company has recently bought a new plate bending machine from FACCIN in Italy (110 mm thick x 3 m wide plate) in addition to an automated CNC bending machine (6 m long x 16 mm thick plate).
Al-Zamil which has always adopted a revolutionary approach towards steel products manufacturing has also modernised its plant by buying shop blast recovery equipment for better quality painting. Other than these, the company has also bought profile bending machine ranging upto 400mm bending capacity and has also ordered two cranes of 55 tonnes and 99 tonnes capacity.
The company has also won many new prestigious projects in the recent past. To start with, the company has won an order to supply and fabricate 3,000 tonnes of steel (non-pressure part and appurtenances) for Shuqaiq-II project in Saudi Arabia from Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). Work on the contract awarded in February and to be completed by mid 2009 has already started, says the company.
The MHI contract has come following the completion of its earlier project for fabrication of 19 tanks at PetroRabigh by Al-Zamil.”MHI was pleased with our fabrication work for their 19 tanks at PetroRabigh which  has been completed. Now they have awarded us the 3,000 tonnes of steel work in Shuqaiq IWPP project in Saudi Arabia,” says Al-zamil Metal Works Factory assistant general manager Capt Ahmed Al-Tabei.
The company has also recently completed an order for fabricating and erecting 12 stainless steel tanks at PetroRabigh for Sumitomo Tanks through the UK-based Whessoe Oil & Gas Ltd. At present, Al-Zamil is working on another contract for 22 tanks and their accessories for Whessoe Oil & Gas, Al-Tabei adds.
Al-Zamil, the pioneer in using the Tank Jacking System, has always been known for breaking new ground in the repair and refurbishment of tank foundations with the use of the jacking system.
Most often, tank manufacturers in Saudi Arabia have used conventional systems in setting up storage tanks. They use voluminous scaffoldings for internal and external structures of the tank, supported by two or more telescopic cranes, says the company.
Al-Zamil is credited with breaking the silence in the tank manufacturing industry in Saudi Arabia when it erected the Dome Roof Tank (31.7 m diameter and 10.15 m high). The tank has a capacity of two million US gallons. The structure became the fresh water storage tank for Al Khafji Joint Operations, KGOC/AGOC (Kuwait Gulf Oil Company and Aramco Gulf Oil), operating with a consortium of SETE Technical Services and Carlo Gavazzi.
As a manufacturer of a wide-range of items in the steel industry, Al-Zamil has strong trade ties with numerous clients namely Samarec, Samref, Arabian Oil Company, Aramco, SCECO, Bechtel, Pemref, Petrolube, Hutta, Toyo, Kawasaki, KHD Germany, Flour Daniel, Technipetrol (TPL), Inso Italy, Geo-Robson & Co (Conveyors), Summit Valley Equipment and Enginee-ring S V, The National Titanium Dioxide Co Ltd-CRISTAL, SNC-Lavalin Europe B V, Saudi Arabian Mining Company (MA’ADEN), De Smet S A Engineers & Contractors (DSEC), SETE Technical Services S A, Yanbu Petrochemical, United Sugar Company, Ltd (USC), Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), Southern Province Cement Company (SPCC), Al Khafji Joint Operations (KJO), Saudi Aramco Lubricating Oil Refining Co (LUBEREF), Mitsubishi Heavy Indus-tries, Ltd (MHI), MACCHI Steam and Power Generation, WHESSOE Oil and Gas Ltd, Saudi Yanbu Petrochemical Co (Yanpet).
Recently, AlZamil handed over TK-125. The scope of supply ranged from replacement of tank foundation, bottom plate, CP system, overhauling of the roof drainage system and other tank accessories that need rehabilitation nor replacement with a diameter of 60.98 m and height of 14.634 m. This would serve as a Crude Oil Tank for KJO.
On the other hand, TK-128, with the same scope of supply, will be handed over soon as final punch-listing is being completed.
Furthermore, Al-Zamil sub-contracted the design, engineering and manufacturing works for a new Fresh Water Storage Tank of Sete and Carlo Gavazzi consortium for the KJO Project in addition to the construction of 1.5 MMGPD MSF Sea Water Desalination and Fresh Water Tank.
Also, LUBEREF Yanbu and Jeddah plant awarded a three-year contract for the various storage tank refurbishment/maintenance of bottom plates, shell plates, roof plates, tank foundation and other tank appurtenances that needs repairs. Initially, at Yanbu plant, Al-Zamil handed over tank F-8003 (roof plates and roof structures replacement, 13.80 m diameter and 12.22 m high), F-8001 (internal roof and top shell ring painting works, 17.20 m diameter and 12.20 m high), and at Jeddah plant they finished tank F-9025 (bottom plate replacement of 20.5 m diameter).
In addition, tank F-9003 (roof internal painting, 25.5 m diameter and 12.2 m height) at Yanbu and tank F-8004 (bottom plates and sand cushion replacement, concrete ring wall repair and CP system refurbishment) at Jeddah are in restoration status.
Currently, LUBEREF Yanbu is scheduled to hand over tank F-9001 (48 m diameter x 17 m high) for refurbishment of roof plates, roof structures and three top tank shell course/ring.
At present, Al-Zamil is working with MHI for the fabrication of tanks for PetroRabigh development project.
Also, Southern Province Cement Co (SPCC), have involved Al-Zamil in their expansion work, by giving the fabrication work for EP system, Cooling Tower (4 m diameter x 20 m high) and Steel Stack (4 m diameter x 80 m high).
In a new line-up of projects, MACCHI recently awarded the fabrication of Air Duct, Air Foil, Flue Gas Duct and Steel Structures for five boilers of Sabic plant in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.
Some more projects have reached the finishing stages.
Al-Zamil is also moving ahead to complete works on New Cold Condensate Tank (18.5 m diameter and 6.8 m high) for SWCC at Shuqaiq Plant. The scope of supply includes design, engineering, fabrication and tank foundation as well as piping works.
Other works include Process Water Tank, F-535B, (15 m diameter and 16.6 m high) for The National Titanium Dioxide Co, Ltd – Cristal at Yanbu. All these are Dome Roof Type Tanks, which are set up using in the Jacking-up System.
