Serving the energy sector with a steely resolve

Ayman Kanaan ... ambitious

ZAMIL Steel Industries was established in 1977, in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, as a joint venture between Zamil Group and Soule Steel, US. In 1982, it became fully owned by Zamil Group after the latter acquired Soule’s interests.

Over the past decade, Zamil Steel has become more global in structure, and is truly focused on the pursuit of its vision – “to be the world’s most reliable and innovative manufacturer, service and solution provider in the steel industry”.

Zamil Steel has recently been divided into two entities that contain businesses of similar purpose: One is the Building Products Group (BPG) which includes all Pre-Engineered Buildings (PEB) business units, Canam Asia, Building Component Solutions; and the second is the Industrial Steel Products Group (ISPG) which consists of the Structural Steel Division, Process Equipment Division, Towers & Galvanising Division, Petro-Chem Zamil and Zimipco.

ISPG’s Structural Steel Division (SSD) is the leading steel fabricator in the Middle East, and is also a diversified division with a large manufacturing capacity in various fields of structural steel and plates work applications.

The factory is located at Dammam 2nd Industrial City, Saudi Arabia, having facilities spread over a total area of 211,620 sq m and a production capacity of 7,000 tonnes per month.

SSD is ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001 certified, and has supplied its steel structures to power, oil and gas, petrochemical and commercial applications including high-rise buildings. SSD’s line of expertise is: pipe racks, equipment support structures, built-up girders and columns, structural steel buildings, high-rise buildings and others.

ISPG’s Process Equipment Division (PED) is specialised in designing and manufacturing pressure vessels, oil/gas separator furnace, heat-exchangers, desalter, fired heaters, air-cooled heat-exchangers, skid mounted module, desalination evaporators, columns, storage-tanks. PED has an area of over 100,000 sq m with a production capacity of 10,000 tonnes per year (tpy).

PED is an accredited holder of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) U, PP, A and S stamps of authorisation. It also hold the NBBI stamp of authorisation from the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors and R stamp for conducting repairs on pressure vessels, boilers and other items.

The third division under ISPG is the Towers and Galvanising (T&G) division, which started its operations in 1985 when Zamil Steel entered into a technical collaboration with ABB SAE Rebosio, of Italy.

T&G provides design, fabrication, galvanising and testing of: electrical over head power transmission line towers, radio and telecommunication towers, radar towers, roof top towers, wall mount towers, substation structures, railway electrification structures, and any other type of lattice steel structures.

The T&G’s hot dip galvanising plant has an existing capacity of 36,000 tpy and a new plant with an additional capacity of 50,000 tpy will commence full operation by the end of 2010, taking its total annual production capacity to 86,000 tpy.

Petro-Chem Zamil is the largest manufacturer of fired heaters, process furnaces and related accessories. A specialised firm, it actively conducts feasibility studies, environmental impact evaluation, engineering efficiency studies, heater optimisation studies, commissioning and post start-up services.

The latest addition to the ISPG portfolio is Zimipco, which is equipped to undertake major construction and maintenance of mechanical contracts /heavy lift on a wide variety of process plants including: petrochemical plants, steel and aluminium mills, power and desalination plants.

It can handle repair of equipment involving ‘R’ stamp up to 200 mm wall thickness, and can allocate any number of skilled technicians at short notice to meet the project requirement. Zimipco with its highly skilled manpower and resources has the capability to undertake major task of turnaround and inspection, heat exchanger refurbishment, mechanical installation/heavy lift, storage tank, process piping maintenance.

ISPG is serving the energy sector with its structural steel and process equipment products in Saudi and the Gulf region. It has also exported its products to Sudan, Portugal, Cyprus, Syria, Algeria, Jordan, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan and other countries; while T&G products are exported to 37 countries with vast experience in Central America, Africa, Middle East, Asia, Far East Australia and New Zealand.

“Coupled with various services from Petro-Chem Zamil, and Zimipco, ISPG today has become a global player in the energy sector – providing total solutions mainly to the oil and gas, power and petrochemical industries. ISPG is indeed a reliable group for the energy sector,” says Ayman Kanaan, vice president of Zamil Steel–ISPG.
