Background
Saudi Aramco plans to build a new oil pipeline, which will be operated by Bapco, from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain to replace the existing AB-1 oil pipeline, which provides Bapco’s Sitra Refinery with feedstock crude oil. Bahrain currently imports about 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil from Saudi Arabia.
The new pipeline will have a capacity of 360,000 bpd. The 115-kilometre, 24-30-inch diameter pipeline will run from the Abqaiq processing facility in Saudi Arabia to Quarriyah and then offshore to Al-Jazayir beach and finally to Sitra in Bahrain. Nearly 60 km of the pipeline will be onshore, while the remaining 45 km will be offshore.
Project status
August 2015: Bapco receives prequalification documents from 13 local contractors for the Bahrain onshore route.
Project scope
The project, called the New Arabian Pipeline Project, is a 115-km long pipeline. It will have a design capacity of 350,000 bpd, with a provision to increase output to 450,000 bpd at a later stage.
The total length of pipeline is as follows:
• Saudi Arabian onshore, 40 km
• Saudi Arabian offshore, 40 km
• Bahrain onshore, 31 km
