VARIOUS pressure relief and activation devices are required throughout the entire process of drilling, completion and production of oil and gas wells.
Failure of these devices is a major problem in the industry. Failures cause downtime, add expense and endanger the environment — and can be caused by a number of factors including downhole temperatures, inconsistent shear pin mounting holes, various wear factors and corrosion.
Applying over 60 years of experience in bursting disc technology Fike provides a solution to these concerns, with accurate and reliable pressure activation devices. Fike rupture/bursting discs provide safety for personnel and the environment, as well as efficient, reliable operation of tooling downhole.
The primary function of a bursting or rupture disc, is twofold — it provides a leak tight seal and it opens in a predictable and controlled manner, as required.
These devices surpass the performance of conventional shear pins by delivering narrow-tolerance pressure relief, with the highest reliability. Bursting discs have been adapted to meet the demanding requirements of aerospace, aviation, defence, nuclear, as well as oilfield applications.
To determine the best solution to demanding or unique applications, Fike engineers and sales staff consider many important factors to make sure you are provided the best solution possible. Application of bursting disc technology to demanding applications is a Fike strength.
Traceability, accountability, and reliability are the hallmarks of Fike’s manufacturing practice. Design flexibility, a wide choice of materials, and suitability for narrow-tolerance critical uses, make these devices the best solution for a wide range of sealing, activation, venting, one-time valving, or pressure relief requirements.
Common applications for Fike bursting discs as pressure relief and activation devices in oil and gas production include the protection of pressure vessels, well heads and deepwater casings, as well as hydraulic tubing drains and tubing conveyed perforation.
Fike offers a variety of pressure relief and activation tools that have made significant improvements to drilling, completion, and production operations—and many are now standard equipment in the oilfield industry, including:
Fike’s cost-effective Pressure Activation Device (PAD) product has positive sealing capability and can be used in any application where reliable and accurate pressure activation is necessary. The PAD-MH which provides pressure activation from within the tubing or drill string, is constructed of Inconel 600 and electron beam-welded to a 316 stainless steel body. This creates a one-piece rupture disc assembly for improved reliability and ruggedness –eliminating the need for shear pin devices that are vulnerable to damage.
Able to be quickly and easily installed using a simple wrench, use of Fike’s PAD-MH means no more stripped threads or damage from slotted tees. Also resistant to sour gas (hydrogen sulphide) atmospheres, the PAD-MH is ideal for extreme downhole conditions. In fact, the PAD-MH has been used in a number of applications where high accuracy pressure activation is required, including drilling, stimulation, motorhead assembly, circulation subs, fishing tools, expansion packer retrieval and other special applications.
