

Ras Laffan Industrial City has already made its mark in Qatar’s history. Below is the city’s journey from vision to reality.
1971
Discovery of the North gas Field.
1974
Beginning of a new era of industrial development in Qatar with the establishment of QGPC.
1987
Phase 1 of North Field development commenced.
1991
QGPC completes gas line from the North Field to Messaied via Ras Laffan.
Contract for design and construction of Ras Laffan Port awarded to Condotti Joint venture.
1992
Qatargas signs Sales and Purchase Agreement with Chubu Electrical Power Co of Japan to export four million tonnes per year (tpy) of LNG.
Basin and Channel dredging started.
Construction starts on main and lee breakwaters.
1993
Contract for the construction of Qatargas LNG plant awarded to Chiyoda Japan.
Port dredging operation completed.
1994
Module Corridor and Ro-Ro berth becomes operational.
First Qatargas cargo ship arrives with heavy LNG plant equipment for initial phase of construction.
Contract to construct seawater cooling intake structure awarded to QBC/ Costain International.
Qatargas starts construction of Sulphur loading/ Storage facilities.
Construction of port building begins.
1995
Qatargas signs sales and purchase agreement with seven Japanese gas and utility companies through Chubu for export for an additional two million tpy of LNG.
LNG berth no. 1 handed over to Qatargas
Qatargas started plant installation on lee breakwater and liquid product berth.
RasGas signs sales and purchase agreement for the initial 2.4 million tpy of LNG for export to South Korea.
1996
Ras Laffan Industrial Area named and re-launched as Ras Laffan Industrial City.
Liquid product berths 2A & 2B completed.
Construction of Qatargas third LNG train commences.
Construction of RasGas 141,000m3 LNG Storage tanks commences in the port.
Qatargas’ first condensate tanker arrives.
Qatargas’ first LNG tanker “Al Zubarah” arrives (December 17).
Port becomes fully operational.
1997
Administration and shipping operations offices open at the port.
Construction of the RasGas plant commences.
Second Qatargas’ LNG tanker, “Al Khor” arrives.
Inauguration of Ras Laffan Port and the Qatargas plant by the Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani (February 24).
1998
Additional shipments of LNG to Japan commence as third Qatargas LNG train comes into operation.
1999
Inauguration of RasGas plant by the the Emir, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani (October 23).
2000
Production of LNG from RasGas Train 2 commences. The aggregate capacity of Trains 1 and 2 is 6.6 million tpy.
2002
Ras Laffan Power Company, the first power company and desalination plant in RLC is inaugurated. Expected capacity 750 MW and 40 million gallons of potable water per day.
Foundation stone for RasGas Train 3 is laid.
2003
Debottlenecking project implemented by Qatargas and achieved 2.5 million man hours with no Lost Time Accidents (LTA).
Ras Laffan Industrial City inaugurated the Common Cooling water project which is expected to distribute 300,000 m3 per hour to six industries in RLC.
2004
Train 3 produces its first LNG and the first shipment leaves for India
Ras Laffan Industrial City implements ISPS code (International Ship & Port Security), complying with international port and city security standards.
Common Cooling Water Project commence operations supplying cooling water to RasGas, Qatargas and RLPC.
2005
RasGas Train 4 and its associated acid gas injection facilities are successfully commissioned ahead of schedule, and the new train produces its first LNG.
The Ras Laffan Helium Project produces its first liquid helium.
RasGas 3 is established to own Trains 6 & 7.
RLC receives ISO 9001:2000 Certification for its Quality Management System.
2006
Foundation stone laid for Qatargas 3 & 4.
Foundation stone laid for Laffan Condensate Refinery.
Ras Laffan Olefins Company foundation stone laid.
Oryx GTL, the first GTL plant is the Middle East is inaugurated on June 6.
