Background
Saudi Aramco plans to build a new oil pipeline, which will be operated by Bapco, from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain to replace the existing AB-1 oil pipeline, which provides Bapco’s Sitra Refinery with feedstock crude oil.
Bahrain currently imports about 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil from Saudi Arabia.
The new pipeline is expected to have a capacity of 350,000 bpd. The 115-kilometre, 24-30-inch diameter pipeline will run from the Abqaiq processing facility in Saudi Arabia to Quarriyah and then offshore to Al-Jazayir beach and finally to Sitra in Bahrain.
Nearly 60 kilometres of the pipeline will be onshore, while the remaining 45 kilometres will be offshore.
Project status
June 2014: Saudi Aramco issued the ITB for the construction contract in July 2014.
Project scope
The project, called the New Arabian Pipeline Project, is a 115-km long pipeline. It will have a design capacity of 350,000 barrels per day (bpd), with a provision to increase output to 450,000 bpd at a later stage.
The total length of pipeline is as follows:
• Saudi Arabian onshore, 40 km;
• Saudi Arabian offshore, 40 km; and
• Bahrain onshore, 31 km.
Project finance
The project is a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Bapco.
