Global players discuss hydrogen developments

The inaugural World Hydrogen Asia took place in Tokyo from July 8–10, 2025, uniting over 200 senior-level stakeholders from 23 countries across the hydrogen value chain.

The event showcased the growing commitment to hydrogen and low-carbon fuels, featuring delegates from Saudi Arabia, Japan, Korea, Australia, Southeast Asia, India, and beyond.

Discussions addressed financing models, policy alignment, shipping decarbonisation, and the scaling of hydrogen infrastructure.

A key message was the importance of early collaboration between producers and offtakers to accelerate project development and secure final investment decisions (FID).

A highlight was the keynote by YAB Johari, Premier of Sarawak, Malaysia, who outlined the state’s five strategic priorities: scaling production, boosting domestic demand, securing long-term offtake agreements, establishing certification frameworks, and investing in innovation.

His vision positioned Sarawak as a future hydrogen hub leveraging hydroelectric resources and LNG infrastructure.

Key insights from the event included the need for harmonised policies across Asia-Pacific, the strategic role of methanol and ammonia in shipping, and the urgency of addressing skilled labour shortages as projects reach construction.

The networking sessions, supported by an interactive event app, fostered over 11,000 interactions, reinforcing the event’s role as a catalyst for partnerships.
