Eni, Sonatrach strengthen partnership to cut emissions in Algeria

Eni and Sonatrach have signed a new Memorandum of Intent to expand cooperation on decarbonising Algeria’s oil and gas sector and reducing emissions in line with international best practices.

The agreement builds on a three-year cooperation framework launched in January 2023, which focused on reducing gas flaring, recovering and valorising gas, and cutting emissions from upstream operations.

Under the new agreement, the companies will broaden their collaboration to include natural CO₂ removal through forestry projects, as well as enhanced monitoring, measurement and reduction of methane emissions based on international oil and gas standards.

Since 2023, Eni and Sonatrach have carried out technical assessments, training programmes and field visits to identify opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas and methane emissions.

Areas examined include fugitive and venting emissions, energy efficiency, renewable energy, flaring reduction and potential carbon capture, utilisation and storage projects.

A joint Leak Detection and Repair campaign covered 800 kilometres of pipelines and around 7,500 monitoring points, helping reduce fugitive emissions.

LDAR campaigns are now conducted routinely and independently across all jointly operated ventures.

The partners have also established baseline emissions assessments for six upstream assets operated by Eni and Sonatrach in Algeria.

Eni has operated in Algeria since 1981 and recorded net production of about 132,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025.

The company said it will continue working with Sonatrach to support emissions reductions and decarbonisation in the country’s energy sector. -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
