Background
The Master Gas System is operated by Aramco and is one of the world's largest hydrocarbon networks, the scheme's construction started in the mid-1970s and came online in 1982 predominantly to transport associated gas from the Ghawar field to support industrialization. To be implemented in phases, the Master Gas System Expansion project is vital for Saudi Arabia to support the development of its non-associated gas, unconventional gas, and related condensate reserves. The Master Gas System Booster Gas Compression Station project will expand the capacity of the East-West Pipeline system to deliver sales gas around the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia started to monetize its gas reserves in the 1970s and by the 2000s Saudi Aramco intended to gather all the associated gas flared until then from the crude oil fields production. For that purpose, Saudi Aramco designed the first phases of the Master Gas System (MGS) crossing the country from Yanbu on the Red Sea to Shedgum in passing by Riyadh. Now Saudi Arabia is willing to speed up the conversion of a number of power plants from oil to natural gas. In that perspective, Saudi Aramco is extending the existing Master Gas System to the Western Province in order to supply the power plants located there. Saudi Aramco's Master Gas - Phase 3 project aims to convert a number of power plants from oil to natural gas, contributing to the country's drive towards a cleaner energy mix and its net-zero emission goal.
