Background

Adnoc Gas aims to maximise ethane recovery from its operations and monetise the product. The Meram project has dual objectives. The first goal is to increase ethane extraction from Adnoc Gas' existing onshore facilities in the Habshan gas processing complex by 35 per cent-40 per cent by constructing new facilities. The second goal is to unlock further value from existing feedstock and deliver it to Ruwais via a 120-kilometre natural gas liquids (NGL) pipeline.

Project Scope

The project scope includes maximising ethane recovery from existing NGL Recovery Units. This encompasses facilities such as Asab-0/3, Bab, Habshan 1 Train 1 & 2, Habshan 1 Train 3, Habshan 2, Habshan 5 (Lean Trains), and Bu Hasa. The goal is to accommodate the anticipated Borouge 4 demand of 2 million tons per annum (mtpa) sustainably by Q3 2025.

Additionally, the project involves the construction of 150 kilometers of pipelines, including tie-ins and brownfield work at Habshan and Ruwais, as well as the establishment of 12 industrial buildings. This will require civil, mechanical, MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing), electrical, and instrumentation (CMEI) works.

Furthermore, the project covers the sourcing of feedstock from several AGP facilities to MERAM. Specifically, it includes residue gas from Bu Hasa, as well as residue gas from Habshan 1, Trains 1, 2, and 3 of Habshan 2, and Habshan 5 Lean Trains.

Project Status

As of January 2025, a new LNG pre-conditioning plant (LPP) within the Habshan 5 gas processing complex will be built to treat gas processed at facilities for gas originating at the MERAM project.

Project Finance

Adnoc Gas, the new natural gas business of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), is the client. In November 2022, Adnoc Group announced the creation of Adnoc Gas through the merger of its subsidiaries Adnoc Gas Processing and Adnoc LNG.
