China’s hydrogen energy sector is expanding rapidly, strengthening its role in the country’s green energy transition through advances in production, storage, transportation and applications.

According to China Central Television, the country launched comprehensive hydrogen application pilot programmes across five major city clusters in August 2026.

China’s annual hydrogen output exceeds 39 million tonnes, accounting for more than half of global production.

The 2026–2030 15th Five-Year Plan has included hydrogen in the non-fossil energy supply system for the first time.

Meanwhile, China is developing green hydrogen projects and expanding pipeline infrastructure, with completed and planned pipelines exceeding 13,000 kilometres.
