EWEC opens registration for Q4 2026 Clean Energy Certificate auction

Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has opened registration for its fourth-quarter 2026 Clean Energy Certificate (CEC) auction, offering businesses across the UAE a commercial mechanism to reduce emissions and support their sustainability goals.

Registration for the auction will close on October 30, 2026.

The auction enables organisations to purchase verified clean energy attributes to demonstrate their use of renewable or clean electricity and meet environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments.

Introduced by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy in 2021, the Regulatory Policy for Clean Energy Certificates has become an important mechanism supporting the UAE’s economic transition.

The scheme serves organisations across industrial, real estate, healthcare, energy and retail sectors.

As the scheme’s Single Registrant and Operator, EWEC issues certificates through competitive quarterly auctions and direct purchase agreements.

Each certificate represents the environmental attributes of one megawatt-hour (MWh) of clean or renewable electricity and complies with the internationally recognised I-REC Standard.

The certificates are accredited and recognised across the UAE, enabling organisations to substantiate clean electricity claims.

The growing availability of certificates reflects Abu Dhabi’s expanding clean energy infrastructure.

EWEC is scaling up the emirate’s utility-scale solar capacity, targeting 14 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and more than 35GW by 2035.

Mohamed Almarzooqi, Chief Assets Officer of EWEC, said: “As we rapidly expand the clean energy infrastructure of Abu Dhabi, we are simultaneously deploying innovative mechanisms that empower organisations to completely eliminate their Scope 2 emissions, allow the wider economy to decarbonise, and enable industries to be competitive in international markets. Every solar and battery storage mega-project we commission increases the pool of verified renewable electricity available, ensuring that the corporate sector can advance in lockstep with the UAE towards a sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon future.”

To encourage participation, EWEC also conducts in-person awareness sessions ahead of auction periods in collaboration with partners and stakeholders across the clean energy value chain.

The sessions explain the programme’s regulatory framework, the benefits of CECs and the available procurement options.

The Q4 auction will operate under a competitive “Pay as Bid” mechanism, whereby participants submit bids for their desired clean energy allocation.

Reserve prices will be established for each certificate category,  solar, nuclear and wind, and communicated during registration.

EWEC is encouraging businesses to participate in the auction to reduce their Scope 2 emissions, strengthen sustainability reporting and contribute to the UAE’s broader clean energy transition. -TradeArabia News Service
