The European Union (EU) has attracted more than €1.2 trillion ($1.3 trillion) in investment in sustainable activities since 2021, according to new data published by the European Commission, highlighting growing use of the bloc’s sustainable finance framework.
In 2025, more than €320 billion was invested in activities
aligned with the EU Taxonomy, a classification system designed to help
businesses and investors identify environmentally sustainable economic
activities.
The energy sector accounted for the largest share of these
investments, driven mainly by electricity providers.
The Commission said the framework supports the EU’s
transition to a low-carbon economy by directing funding towards clean
technologies, renewable energy and infrastructure.
These investments also strengthen the bloc’s energy security
and strategic autonomy by reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.
European Green Bonds are also gaining momentum. Since the
European Green Bond Standard came into force in December 2024, around €60
billion has been issued.
This included €21 billion in 2025 and a further €39 billion
between January 1 and October 7, 2026, nearly doubling the amount issued during
the standard’s first year.
The voluntary standard enables bond issuers to raise funds
for sustainable activities aligned with the EU Taxonomy, helping investors
identify investments that support environmental objectives.
The Commission said the figures demonstrate the framework’s
role in building a more sustainable, resilient and competitive European economy.
It is continuing efforts to simplify the rules and make the
framework easier for businesses and investors to implement. -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
