Saudi Cement Company (SCC) is a Saudi Joint Stock Company established in 1955.
The principal object of the company is to produce and sell cement, cement products and invest in cement related fields.
SCC operates two cement plants in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The two plants, namely Hofuf Plant and Ain Dar Plant, are about 35 km apart. Both are located at an approximately equal distance of around 120-130 km from King Abdul Aziz Port at Dammam.
SCC started operations in 1961 when one kiln of 300 tonnes of clinker per day was inaugurated at the Hofuf Plant.
The Hofuf Plant since then has executed four expansions, renovations and upgrades of its facilities, the last of which was in 1997 when a kiln of 3,504 tonnes of clinker capacity (kiln number 6) was added, bringing the total capacity of the plant to 7,825 tonnes of clinker per day.
The Ain Dar Plant started as an independent company under the name of "Saudi-Bahraini Cement Company" (SBC) back in 1981, when 4 kilns of 1,500 tonnes of clinker capacity each were inaugurated (total of 6,000 tonnes of clinker per day).
SBC continued its operations independently till December 31, 1991. After that Saudi-Bahraini Cement Company merged with SCC and operations since then have continued under the old name of "Saudi Cement Company."
Products
SCC currently produces the following types of cements:
1. Ordinary Portland Cement - OPC
2. Sulphate Resisting Cement - SRC
3. Oil well cement - OWC
SCC has the flexibility in its facilities to produce other types of cement as per
market requirements.
SCC operates nine long dry kilns and one short preheater precalciner. It has an annual cement grinding capacity of 6,000,000 tonnes.
Quality
SCC produces its OPC and SRC cement in accordance with the specifications of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) C-150, British Standards (BS-12), and Saudi Arabian Standards Organisation (SASO).
Oil well cement (OWC) Class G is produced as per American Petroleum Institute (API) specifications, under API licence to use API monogram. SCC is the only company in the kingdom producing OWC and supplying to Saudi Ararmco and exporting to Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait.
SCC has since eight years acquired the ISO 9001: 1994 certification for both of its Hofuf and Ain Dar plants. Since then it has revised its quality system manual and procedures to comply with ISO 9001: 2000 (version). Certification to ISO is being carried by the German firm TUV.
Saudi Cement Company has the most modern and efficient quality control system in the laboratory. It consists of automatic sampling system, analysing system and computer controlled "quality control system," including the most important Fully Automatic Sample Preparation System.
The Fully Automatic Sample Preparation System in the laboratory consists of pneumatic tube receiving from dispatch station, grinding mills, powder press, sample input box, ROBOT with control unit, conveyor belts, sample preparation control unit, a dust collector, and controllers.
The Robotics Control System is the heart of the quality control of the cement produced. Due to full automation of sample preparation and analysis any human error during the basic step of sample preparation is totally eliminated. Thereby, product quality control is made most reliable.
Marketing
SCC markets its products in both the local and export markets. SCC is proud of having played a very vital role in the development of modem Saudi Arabia. SCC has contributed positively in supplying its cement products to most of the infrastructure projects that were carried out in Saudi Arabia such as airport projects, seaport projects, the causeway, highways, power plants, major industrial plants and overall construction industry.
SCC distributes its products in the neighbouring areas and cities such as Al Hasa, Dhahran, Dammam and Al Khobar cities in the Eastern Province and Riyadh and its surroundings in the Central Province. Considerable quantities of SCC's products are also being distributed in the Southern Province.
Export terminal
As for export markets, SCC is one of the pioneering Saudi companies in this activity. SCC exports its products to various neighbouring countries, mainly Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar, and to countries in Europe, Africa and the US.
In order to boost its export activities, SCC has built and commissioned an export terminal at King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam. The terminal is able to load cement and clinker to the ships at the rates of 800 tonnes per hour, and 700 tonnes per hour respectively.
The terminal is considered as one of its kind in the world. Transport of cement and clinker from both SCC plants to the terminal is done by railway wagons.
Management and manpower
SCC is being directed by an 11-member board of directors. The members of the board are all prominent businessmen in Saudi Arabia, the Gulf and internationally.
The manpower in both plants and head office in Dammam c omprises many nationalities. Manpower strength is adequate to the volume of production at both plants, kilns technology and the requirements of other related facilities.
