Dogdson ... turning Byrne into a single solution source company

The company's specialists can design, manufacture, install and service any configuration of accommodation, whether it is a fly, rig or full scale static and mobile accommodation village

Byrne Investments Saudi Arabia Limited (BISAL) has done extensive research and development to standardise its product offering, which includes several highly specialised product lines purpose built for the oil and gas industry.

The company is a single source solution for turnkey camp solutions, a feature it claims is unmatched in the market.

In an exclusive interview with OGN, James Dodgson, General Manager of BISAL, speaks of the company’s strengths, achievements, and future outlook including offering sustainable solutions to the market.

What is Byrne’s camp solutions offering for the Oil & Gas sector?

Byrne's camp istallation underway

We provide full turnkey solutions for camps. Our team of specialists can design, manufacture, install and service any configuration of accommodation, whether it is a fly, rig or full scale static and mobile accommodation village, in addition to supporting services inclusive of transportation, catering, housekeeping, laundry and security.

Furthermore, we can provide sewage treatment plants, reverse osmosis, power generation, furniture, HVAC and more as part of the camp solution.

Our temporary buildings are heavy duty, with movable steel building design, purpose built for the oil and gas sector.

We are able to provide suitable infrastructure to meet any requirement — from 10 man camps to more than 10,000 — however remote the project may be.

In providing camp solutions, what are your main market differentiators?

Our value proposition is at the core of our competitive advantage — efficiency and cost savings with a single source supplier, a service that is unmatched in the market.

In partnership with our sister company, Byrne Technical Services (BTS), we offer a unique solution of renting or owning and operating a fully functional accommodation village, where a client works on a man-day basis based on his project manpower schedule. This includes modular buildings.

It is incredibly important that our clients have a single point of contact for all their accommodation and worker village needs since dealing with more than one contractor can be taxing.

Some of our key differentiators lie in the workmanship and quality of materials used to produce these structures.

With the required systems in place and our accreditations, we ensure that the supply chain, materials and subcontractors appointed are all in-line with our work philosophy and culture.

For Byrne, meeting market industry standard is of highest priority especially in restricted or specialised zones, and our clients can be assured that all operational boxes are ticked (QA/QC, HSE) dependant on which final entity is being served.

What are your key achievements in the oil and gas industry over the years?

Byrne offers a unique solution of renting or owning and operating
a fully functional accommodation village

Since our inception over 30 years ago, oil and gas has played a major role in our strategic focus and growth.

In KSA, we have had great success in the petrochemical sector with our work ranging from supporting daily plant operations, general equipment rental and planned shutdown activities.

Over the past decade we have been involved in most major shutdowns across the Eastern Province.

The strategic decision to position our KSA headquarters in Jubail has enabled us to build a good reputation and customer base across all major plants and oil and gas contractors in the Kingdom, and we will continue to build on this going forward.

Where are your strongest geographical markets in the oil and gas industry?

Geographically, we have a presence across the entire GCC, including the UAE, KSA, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. However, the lion’s share of our business operations is in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

In the UAE we have achieved significant success in the upstream market over the years with our turnkey camp solutions. Looking to the future, we intend to replicate our proven strategy and success in KSA as we can foresee the fantastic opportunities there.

Meanwhile, in KSA, the majority of our focus and growth has been in the downstream market and we intend to expand this to other locations and operations across the GCC.

Major oil and gas projects such as Marjan, Safaniya and Haradh/Hawiya will continue to be high priorities for us.

And very much on our radar are major infrastructure projects being developed in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, including NEOM, Red Sea Development and Qiddaya to name a few.

What industry trend do you think will present a challenge/opportunity for the onshore accommodation providers?

Turnkey camp contracting with facilities management is a growing trend and one that Byrne Equipment Rental is well positioned to support.

Also, due to an increasing number of explorations and projects at remote locations across the GCC, a recent development in the market has been the rise in demand for accommodation for office staff and management who are required to be based on site.

In the last few years in KSA we have had success in the events sector as well. Byrne has designed and manufactured equipment to use in the Kingdom’s growing events segment.

These take into account the need for quick deployment and high mobility as well as the need to be aesthetically pleasing and highly durable.

And with the trend of high-profile events continuously increasing in the next few years, Byrne will be there to contribute to their success.

How are you remaining relevant in today’s market, and what will be your main strategy in the years to come?

We are constantly adapting our product lines to meet the needs of the market. We recently introduced a range of oil and gas products tailored to the needs of our offshore clients and the projects they were recently awarded.

Byrne works with OEM partners to develop leading-edge equipment modifications. This includes our recently introduced range of powered access platforms with advanced safety features and telemetrics for remote monitoring.

At Byrne, our main focus has always focused on serving our clients with superior products and services, with a sense of agility and a proactive approach to a generally reactive industry.

We will continue to focus on being a single source solution provider and continue to invest in products and services that expand this offering.

With a major shift in the market to sustainable solutions, we are seeing a larger proportion of our focus in developing the way our products services impact the environment with the adoption of hybrid solutions.
