When the decision was taken to construct Banagas' facilities, immediate steps were taken to ensure availability of competent staff to work at the plant.
A vigorous long-term development programme was undertaken to train skilled operators to run the plant, which was subsequently extended to provide training to mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering technicians.
Short-term programmes were also introduced to meet the immediate needs of the company for other skilled personnel.
Alongside these programmes was annual recruitment of secondary school graduates to follow sponsored technical education courses in Bahrain as well as in-company training.
Such recruitment and training, which was to continue for a number of years, was initiated for two specific reasons: to ensure rapid Bahrainisation without depleting other industries in the country of their trained employees and to ensure an efficient and highly-qualified national workforce.
The programmes proved so successful that by 1982, 65 per cent of Banagas' workforce were Bahrainis.
The company also needed staff with professional qualifications and so over the years a number of petroleum and gas technology trainees were taken on who ultimately were to assume full responsibility for shift operator positions.
Some of these trainees undertook their courses at the Gulf Polytechnic in Bahrain whilst yet others were to benefit from the award of Banagas scholarships to pursue higher studies either at overseas universities, such as those in Saudi Arabia, the US and the UK, or at Bahrain University, thereby enabling them to acquire those qualifications considered relevant to pursuit of their chosen careers.
In support of the company's training activities an instrument craft training centre was established and equipped, training manuals were prepared and a training section formed to fully organise and consolidate all Banagas' training activities.
Integral to these was the development of training programmes, in association with the Gulf Polytechnic, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and specialist consultants, for Bahraini employees and trainees seeking to work in non-technical areas of the business such as administration, personnel and finance.
Banagas firmly believes that training is the key to personal efficiency and productivity and will continue to reinforce its training activities to create a highly qualified Bahraini workforce.
