From the earliest days, Banagas has made a serious commitment to quality assurance and control so as to ensure full and consistent satisfaction of customer requirements whilst adhering to the highest international standards.
Proof of the company's success in this regard has been the ability to produce liquefied gases 100 per cent in accordance with required specifications year-after-year.
Furthermore, the company has never in its history delivered off-specification product to the wharf.
Even with such success, 1992 saw the company initiating the processes leading to the introduction of a well-established and internationally recognised quality assurance system.
In the light of the decision taken, a programme was launched the next year to enhance the quality assurance system throughout the company to enable attainment of ISO 9002 at the earliest opportune time, which proved to be later the same year, when the company received its certification from the British Standards Institute (BSI).
Since then, constant attention has been paid also to the awareness of quality amongst the workforce. Integral to this activity the company has held quality competitions, issued quality bulletins, offered a quality sward and held regular group discussions, to enhance appreciation of the need for quality in every aspect of the company's activities.
Furthermore, as part of the company's strategy for continuous improvement, operating procedures have continued to be enhanced and the scope of the quality assurance system extended to include support areas such as computer services and public relations, as a result of which a common system now prevails in the company.
The net result was that the company's aspirations of attaining ISO 9001: 2000 were satisfied in 2003, when it received certification from BSi. Since that time, continuous assessment by the BSi has ensured on-going compliance with and enhancement of the required standards such that by 2004 every section within the business enjoyed full accreditation.
Receiving the latest ISO certification was not solely an achievement in itself, but more a sign of close cooperation between the management and the workforce and the instilling in the mind of every employee the need for teamwork and a greater sense of responsibility.
From such a platform the company's continuous improvement programme has become an integral part of the company's strategy for the future in deriving maximum benefit from available resources.
Meanwhile, operating in an industrial environment with highly flammable gases has necessitated close attention to occupational health and safety.
From the very beginning the company has exerted extensive efforts to formulate stringent regulations for safe working procedures at all company facilities so as to safeguard both life and property. In pursuing this aim, Banagas has followed closely the occupational health and safety requirements of the international gas industry as a whole, including policies to:
• Maintain a work environment which provides for the safety, health and protection of employees;
• Advance a programme to ensure employees lives are protected from potential hazards through compliance with safety regulations and training in the use of safety equipment.
In compliance with these regulations emergency procedures for compressor stations, the central gas plant and the storage area were drawn up and brought to the attention of all those working in these areas before the onset of production. Furthermore, every new recruit to the company goes through an induction course in safety awareness as the very first element of this training.
A fire training centre incorporating a smoke chamber was commissioned during the company's first years and over time the fire department has remained equipped with the very latest fire fighting and safety equipment and apparatus and has constantly sought to ensure implementation of the most up-to-date procedures.
The department provides on-going fire training activities and ensures that every employee has some exposure to fighting fires.
It is responsible also for ensuring the operational readiness of the emergency flooding facilities on all storage tanks in case an emergency arises.
The quality of the fire fighting teams at Banagas is second to none as evidenced by their regular success at the annual inter-company fire fighting competitions, which the company has won on many occasions.
The importance of safety is constantly present in all aspects of the company's life as is well-evidenced by the holding of monthly departmental meetings and management safety committee meetings which are held to discuss, promote and improve safety standards within the company. To keep the workforce aware of the need for such constant attention to safety, periodical competitions are held for which prizes are awarded.
