RasGas was established in 1993 to produce LNG and other related hydrocarbon products from Qatar’s huge offshore field, North Field.
Discovered in the early 1970s, with estimated reserves of over 900 trillion standard cubic feet of recoverable gas, Qatar’s North Field is the largest offshore non-associated natural gas field in the world.
It covers a total of 6000 sq.km. and extends from slightly onshore to continue all the way North to the three contract areas, i.e. RasGas (RG), QatarGas (QG) and North Field Alpha (NFA).
Development in the North Field commenced in 1991 with the NFA complex, operated by Qatar Petroleum.
Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company Limited (II) was established in 2001 by Qatar Patroleum (70 per cent) and ExxonMobil (30 per cent) to construct and own the offshore and onshore facilities required to supply LNG to Petronet, Edison Gas and future customers.
RasGas Company Limited was formed by QP (70 per cent) and ExxonMobil (30 per cent) in 2001 to assume responsibility for providing a full range of operations and maintenance management services to the owners of LNG Trains 1 and 2, the owners of LNG Train 3 and future expansion facilities.
The RasGas 2 project recently signed a sales and purchase agreement with Distrigas-Europe for the export of LNG to Belgium.
The agreement projects the export of 2 million tonnes of LNG annually via the Zeebrugge terminal in Belgium.
