Qapco was established in 1974 as a joint multinational venture to utilise the associated and non-associated ethane gas from petroleum production in line with the industrialisation plan of the State of Qatar.
It is one of the companies located in the Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC), producing fertilisers, steel, refined petroleum products and natural gas liquids.
The Qapco plant is situated on the seacoast with jetty facilities and exports its entire range of products worldwide.
Qapco commenced commercial production in 1981 and within a short time, was well-established in the global market due to its quality and reliability.
To pursue leadership, continuous improvement, process and system orientation, involvement of the people and measurement of performance in support of its journey to achieve excellence of performance, the company has re-designed its Quality Management System to comply with the requirements of ISO 9001:2000 standard, implemented it in its practice and achieved the official certification to its requirements by beginning of 2002.
The main products of the company are ethylene and LDPE. Solid sulphur is generated as a by-product in the process. The required feedstock, ethane gas, is supplied by the state-owned Qatar Petroleum (QP) for the production of ethylene, a significant part of which is then used in the production of various grades of LDPE, marketed under the 'LOTRENE' brand name.
Qapco built its vision on a solid foundation of state-of-the-art technology, which will make possible a succession of new generation products.
Its manufacturing facilities consist of an ethylene plant with a designed annual capacity of 525,000 tonnes, two LDPE plants with a total annual capacity of 360,000 tonnes and a sulphur plant with an annual rated capacity of 70,000 tonnes besides the self-sufficient utilities, plants and other offsite and auxiliary facilities.
The capacity of both the ethylene and LDPE plants increased to these levels effective from mid-1996 as a result of an expansion project undertaken by the company during 1993-95.
Preservation of the environment remained yet another area of concentration for the company.
The company genuinely understands the fact that the environment is an irreplaceable asset and has been concentrating its efforts on inculcating an environment-friendly attitude within the organisation.
Qapco considers the health and safety of its employees to be of utmost importance and has taken all possible measures to maintain a very healthy and safe working condition.
All its employees possess adequate knowledge of the surrounding hazardous conditions and are constantly updated with the latest safety policies and procedures.
They are also well equipped to efficiently combat any safety hazards that may occur during their course of work, says the company.
The safe working conditions and employee awareness of surrounding hazardous conditions have contributed to a significant decrease in man-hours lost and accidents in the company.
