R/V GeoPacific ... one of nine vessels in the Fugro fleet

In the last few years companies within the global Fugro Group have made it into the top flight of international geophysical and reservoir service contractors, with a strong emphasis on the Middle East.

The Fugro Geoscience Division provides Geophysical and Reservoir services and is rapidly becoming one of the preferred partners in these areas for many International oil companies. The heart of Fugro’s Geoscience Division is formed by Fugro-Geoteam, Fugro-Robertson and Fugro-Jason.
The Fugro Group of companies currently have approximately 8000 employees based in 275 office locations in 65 different countries. These resources provide one of the best global networks in the entire geophysical and reservoir services business. The turnover for the Fugro Group is in the order of  $1.5 billion per year.
The Fugro Group is represented in most countries in the Middle East with local offices and in many cases joint ventures have been formed with local companies.
Fugro-Geoteam has grown substantially in the Marine Seismic business and today operates a fleet of 9 high technology seismic vessels. Fugro-Geoteam is able to offer our clients vessels that are capable of meeting today’s wide variety of technical and environmental challenges when acquiring either 4D, 3D or 2D seismic data. We are also preparing to enter the new markets.
As Fugro-Geoteam is a Norwegian company it is able to draw on a great deal of experience amongst employees of operating in complex marine environments. This experience has proved to be very advantageous when operating in the Middle East.
Over many years International and National State companies in the Middle East region have benefited from 3D and 2D marine seismic surveys undertaken by Fugro-Geoteam. Fugro- Geoteam have conducted surveys in the Persian Gulf, Arabian Gulf, Oman Sea, Gulf of Suez and the Mediterranean. Between 1999 and 2004, Fugro-Geoteam acquired approximately 10,000 sq km of 4D/3D and 30,000 km of 2D seismic data in the Middle East region.
Some examples of some of the surveys carried out by Fugro-Geoteam in the Middle East are:
A large seismic survey was carried out in 2004 for Saudi Aramco in the complex and shallow waters of the Arabian Gulf. The survey consisted of approximately 10,000km of 2D seismic data and was carried out by Fugro-Geoteam through the local Saudi joint venture, Fugro-Suhami.
Saudi Aramco’s geological and reservoir experts are currently carrying out extensive interpretation of the data.and are apparently  highly satisfied with the quality of the project and are considering conducting further 3D exploration of the area surveyed. Fugro-Geoteam, with its expertise and knowledge of the Arabian Gulf would most lkely be the ideal candidate for any future 3D work.
The firm's main projects incluce:
• A 2400 sq.km 3D survey was carried out in the Straits of Hormuz for the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC). The survey area had areas of shallow water and was also used extensively by Oil tankers and other vessels transiting to and from Oil loading facilities and ports in Iran. Up to six service vessels were used in order to ensure that this complex operation was conducted in a professional manner.
• 3D seismic data has been acquired over a total of 6 existing oil and gas fields for the Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC) in the Persian Gulf. These projects totals some 3000 sq.km and involved undershooting more than 40 platforms and structures. The undershooting operations were planned in great detail and successfully executed. Two of Fugro-Geoteam’s best high technology 3D vessels were used for the undershooting operations along with additional support vessels. As all re-fueling and crew changes were carried out offshore, no valuable time was wasted during the projects.
• A large 15000 km 2D seismic project has been carried out in the Southern Caspian Sea for the Iranian Company KEPCO.
• Fugro-Geoteam during the period 2002-2003 also carried out major 3D work totaling 2000 sq.km for Oil Search in Yemen, and some 2500 sq.km of 3D work for BG, BP and Devon Energy in Egypt Mediterranien and Gulf of Suez.
• Currently, Fugro-Geoteam are carrying out a 1300 sq km 3D survey for Talisman Energy / Qatar Petroleum in Block 10, offshore Qatar.
In addition to Marine Seismic Surveys, Fugro-Geoteam have undertaken Survey planning, Seismic Data Processing, Reservoir Modelling / Evaluation and Reservoir Characterisation services in terms of integrated projects / contracts for our clients in the Middle East. We are currently working with individual oil companies in an effort to improve their Oil and Gas recovery rates (IOR related studies).
When operating in the Middle East, many of the contracts undertaken by Fugro have involved extensive training of local employees of the state oil company. Fugro have provided training for local personnel in Geophysical and Reservoir related subjects, Oil and Gas related Finance and Management. This training has been conducted in Norway, the UK and also locally.
Fugro-Geoteam will remain highly focused on the Middle East region and will continue to offer high quality 2D, 3D and 4D marine seismic services, as well as introducing 4C to the Oil and Gas companies in the region. We shall also continue to offer total solutions from the early exploration phases, through to the tail end production of oil and gas fields through  cooperation with our sister companies in the Fugro Group. So providing our clients with integrated solutions in all Geophysical and Reservoir services.
