Background

SADAF, a SABIC affiliate having its manufacturing complex at Al Jubail Industrial City in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has a MTBE plant, which consists of n-butane isomerisation unit, isobutene dehydrogenation unit ant MTBE synthesis unit. SADAF plans to increase the capacity of the MTBE plant. SABIC has merged SADAF with Petrokemya to create a more efficient entity. SADAF's assets, rights, liabilities, and obligations will be transferred to Petrokemya. Upon commissioning the project, SABIC will become one of the largest MTBE producers in the Middle East.

Project Scope

The scope of the new Methyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether (MTBE) Plant is to increase the original capacity by 30%, which involves improvements and debottlenecking. Tianchen Company’s scope includes N-butane isomerisation, isobutane dehydrogenation, MTBE synthesis units, and other associated facilities.

Project Status

As of May 2025, construction on the MTBE improvement project is underway. Mechanical completion is expected in 2025.

The project client is Petrokemya, a SABIC affiliate having its manufacturing complex at Al Jubail Industrial City in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

SABIC has obtained the relevant regulatory approvals to merge its whollyowned affiliate Saudi PetrochemicalCompany (Sadaf) with all the assets, rights, liabilities and obligations inits wholly owned a liate Arabian Petrochemical Company (Petrokemya). As of the merger, Sadaf no longer exists as an independent entity.
