Descon is active in Oman

Since its inception in 1977 in Lahore, Pakistan, Descon has evolved into a leading engineering company serving various industrial sectors in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Over the years the company has gained rich experience in plant construction. “From a small outfit we have grown into a big organisation,” says Amer Kamran Khawaja, director business development and new ventures, Descon Engineering limited.
Besides Pakistan the company is active in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Egypt and Afghanistan. It has two manufacturing facilities in Saudi – Jubail and Yanbu and two in the UAE – Sharjah and Ruwais (Abu Dhabi).
“We concentrate mainly on oil and gas projects and are in the business of project management, EPC contract management, construction projects, fabrication and maintenance of everything related to industrial projects,” says Khawaja.
“In addition we do infrastructure projects like building dams, motorways. So far the infrastructure projects are limited to Pakistan, but we are looking at expanding into the Middle East.”
The company says more than 50 per cent of its revenue is from the international operations. For the current year the company is expecting revenue of half a million dollars.
“We have a healthy backlog of about $650 million at the moment and are expecting to win some more good projects in the coming months,” he says.
Its Saudi operations were established in 1982 and the company operates as a joint venture with Olayan. 
With two manufacturing facilities, Olayan Descon, is active in the field of construction and manufacturing of process equipment, plant services and Eni works, says Asad Azar, Manager Business Development with Olayan Descon.
“So far the business in the Kingdom has been satisfactory and for the current year the company expects a turnover of US$100 million. We currently have a backlog of $200 million.”
Descon’s UAE office was set up in 1983 with Emirates Holding as its sponsor. Today the company is a leading name in construction and maintenance projects, says Syed Abrar Ali, General Manager, Descon Engineering UAE.
“We work mainly with Adnoc and associate companies and have good business in hand. We have also bid for a number of projects.”
The company also has an office in Qatar and is in the process of winning a $184 million contract  from Shell for Pearl GTL project. This will be the largest construction project to be undertaken by the company, according to Khawaja.
Besides construction projects, the company is currently focusing on EPC business and is in the process of bidding for projects and expects the business to expand rapidly in the years to come.
