Library offers good collection of books

THE ADNOC Library and Audio Visual Center (AV) is a well-organised and rich source of top quality information on the core areas of the hydrocarbon industry.

Established in 1975,  the AV centre offers information on subjects ranging from exploration and production, processing, marketing to research and development.
Resources in business and project management, infor-mation technology, human resources and training environment, finance and accounting, and current affairs also constitute a significant part of the collections.
“Due to its limited space, the library and AV centre strives to make available a good collection of printed volumes, electronic format and audiovisual material,” claims the company.
It maintains the printed collection at approximately  9,000 volumes through a process of new acquisitions and withdrawals, 350 titles in print and electronic format and over 1,500 volumes of audiovisual material.
The main objective for the creation of the library and AV centre was to identify, organise and disseminate information to Adnoc employees on their work requirements.
In the light of emerging digital and networking technologies, several long-term goals have been established.
This has been done to increase access to a range of critical information resources -- both print and electronic -- from local and international sources, provide a superior library environment that integrates traditional library facilities with virtual desktop access to critical information resources and improve the level and quality of service through well-trained and competent staff.
The aim is to also promote  co-operative library and information services, including centralised automated library systems, among the Adnoc Group.
Efforts were under way  to achieve these goals, in part, by introducing updated collections and services for increased business values, making efficient use of new technologies, including completing the implemen-tation of the new library management and informa-tion system Q-Series and its web-based Online Public Access Catalogue WebOPAC.
Efforts were also made  to  expand and remodel the library and the AV centre to increase space for users and collections, to emphasise new technologies and create a more up-to-date and functional environment, pursuing Internet-based library skills training for staff, closer collaboration with other library and information service providers and users in the Adnoc Group to pursue corporate licences and discounts for shared resources.
Resources covering the core subject area -- the hydrocarbon industry from exploration and production, processing, marketing to research and development, are evaluated and selected for addition to the collections.
Resources in business and project management, information technology, human resources and training, finance and accounting, environment, and current affairs round out the collections.
These library resources, which are collected in formats like print, electronic and audiovisual, are catalogued according to international library standards and classified using the Library of Congress Classification System.
This bibliographic data, along with detailed holdings information, is entered into the new, online library catalogue, Q-Series, a state-of-the-art library manage-ment information system.
Print formats include directories, handbooks, manuals, dictionaries, and encyclopedias, which are shelved by call number in the reference section, while books, conference proceedings and maps can be found in the stacks area.
