One of NPCC's most prestigious projects was the heaviest single integrated oil producing platform built in the Gulf area.

The Al Shaheen Field Development Project - Package 2 involved the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPIC) of the platform for Maersk Oil Qatar AS.

Located 80 km offshore Qatar in the Al Shaheen field, the engineering and part procurement services for 'AB' topsides was subcontracted to ABB Lummus Global of The Netherlands.

The work scope covered under this EPIC Package 2 included EPIC of five level 'AB' Integrated Wellhead and Process Platform, 'AD' Accommodation Platform for 109 men, a 100 metre-long AB-AD Interconnecting Bridge, a 22 metre long AB-AA tie-in frame and other associated works.

The project design was based on the Maersk International Technical Standards (MITS) and other International Codes and Standards.

Lloyds Register of Shipping (LRS) was the certifying authority for main structures, while Det Norske Veritas (DNV) provided certification for the Marine Warranty Survey.

Work took place at NPCC's offices and fabrication yard at Mussafah in Abu Dhabi and ABB Lummus Global's offices in The Netherlands.

The main contract was awarded on February 1997. Offshore installation took place on August 18, 1998 and hand-over for production took place on October 11, 1998.

Production start-up took place on October 15 of the same year.

NPCC beat the overall completion target of 21 months by one month, both for offshore installation and final hand over of the project.

For installation, NPCC utilised the Float-over Installation Technique.

The installation was carried out in a record time of six hours using NPCC launch barge LB-1.

The Ballasting System was automated, with computerised Pressure Transducers for Sounding & Draft Measurements.
