The Sword of Honour ... one of several awards won by safety-conscious NPCC

There is a definite change in the safety culture of NPCC today, according to a senior company official.

''We need to work and always think of the bigger picture, thus ensuring that we have a meaningful HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) culture rather than just thinking about the HSE issues unique only to individuals or their department,'' said Bill Clyne, Head of Safety at NPCC.

''The Safety Section can support this approach by the training of Line Managers and Supervisors to provide the tools to tackle HSE issues effectively,'' he added.

Clyne points out that it is NPCC's duty to ensure that all personnel are made aware of the implications of not complying with good safety standards.

He stresses that subcontractors working on NPCC projects need to be safety conscious at all times.

''Therefore, we need to continuously monitor and improve our control procedures because it is equally vital for our subcontractors' personnel to be safe on site.

''All our subcontractors coming to work on site must first receive Induction Training in NPCC's HSE standards prior to starting work,'' he says.

NPCC's HSE procedures are continually reviewed to ensure a cohesive approach to an HSE policy in which NPCC strongly believes that good HSE performance is an integral part of its business.

As part of the policy, NPCC pledges to set standards which ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory and legislative requirements, and apply internationally recognised standards where local laws and regulations do not exist; ensure all levels of management are accountable and responsible for HSE issues, and continue to develop the above-mentioned ''Safety Culture'' in the company.

At NPCC, such a policy is clearly paying dividends. The International Pipeline and Offshore Contractors' Association (IPLOCA) awarded NPCC the 'Major Offshore Contractor 1999 Safety Award'' for outstanding safety performance.

In 1989, NPCC qualified for the British Sword of Honour award by the British Safety Council for being chosen as one of the top 30 safest companies in the world.

In addition, during 1999 the following safety records were announced for manhours worked without Lost Time Accident (LTA):

  • One million manhours in Mussafah Fabrication Shop

  • One million manhours in the Pipe Coating Yard

  • One million manhours in the Offshore Division base

Awards and records are proof of NPCC's capabilities and that it is a world-class contractor.
