Wärtsilä Energy Storage has been recognised in TIME’s 2025 Best Inventions for its innovative energy storage system at the Blackhillock site in Scotland.
This 200 MW / 400 MWh facility, operated by Zenobē, is among Europe’s largest grid-scale systems and the first to provide stability services to the UK’s National Energy System Operator.
Launched under the National Grid’s NOA Stability Pathfinder programme, it aids in balancing supply and demand, supporting the UK’s renewable energy transition and expected to reduce carbon emissions by 2.6 million tonnes over 15 years.
Powered by Wärtsilä’s GEMS Digital Energy Platform, it optimises grid operations.
