Greenpeace Mena is urging oil-dependent Mena economies to reject GDP-first growth and phase out fossil fuels.
In an exclusive interview with OGN, Ghiwa Nakat, the group’s Executive Director, proposes scaling distributed renewables via rooftop solar and community microgrids, securing fair climate finance, and enforcing polluter-pays mechanisms.
Through its ‘Major Air Polluters in Africa Unmasked’ report, Greenpeace exposes energy-sector emissions as a major driver of air pollution and health crises.
She calls the ‘Make Polluters Pay’ campaign’s landmark environmental taxation victory in Iraq instrumental, and calls for oil and gas firms to halt expansion and fund climate damages.
"A just energy transition aligned with a wellbeing economy requires phasing out fossil fuels, prioritising local energy supply, and expanding distributed renewable systems such as rooftop solar and community microgrids," says Nakat.
