KPC committed to preserving marine environment

In many parts of the world, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) is the sole representation of Kuwait, which deepens its resolve to raise the name of Kuwait on the local and international levels.

The following report reveals the humanitarian side of the corporation and sheds light on some of the social activities undertaken by the corporation.
Supporting Jaber Al Kuwait reefs
KPC contributed to sponsoring the most important marine environmental project in Kuwait, which was Jaber Al Kuwait Reefs and more specifically the Grand Reserve of Bnaidar.
The marine reserve is still viewed as a major national voluntary project for the creation of an underwater national park and development of settlements for coral reefs, fish and other sea creatures.
The project was overseen by the Kuwait Dive Team which had created 19 artificial reserves for coral reefs and fish. The reefs were made of created concrete and weighed 900 tonnes. They were placed on the sea bed at particular depths which are suitable for different species and included 6,500 holes which were designed to act as shelters for fish and various sea creatures.
The main reasons for creating artificial reserves in Kuwait are the lack of favourable factors for the building up of natural coral reefs, the limited area and distribution of the existing reefs, and the natural and human destruction of the reefs. Coral reefs are very important because, not only do they provide a shelter for fish and other marine creatures, they are one of the most important links in the marine food chain and serve as a store of nutrition for the seas. They also represent a national and 'touristic' wealth while constituting aquatic natural gardens made of marine materials.
As well as providing a suitable environment for the growth of corals and for the settlement of fish, it is hoped that the Bnaidar reserve will attract amateur divers and raise their awareness as they watch the growth of the coral reefs, and reduce the impact of divers' presence on the natural coral reefs.

Beach clean-up campaign
In conjunction with the corporation and its subsidiaries' concern to preserve the marine environment, protect marine life and curb all forms of marine pollution, the corporation launched a campaign to clean the Kuwaiti beaches and islands in cooperation with Dive Caroline and several private companies and schools.
This beach cleaning campaign witnessed the participation of 160 children aged from six to eight, from six different schools. Involving children in this kind of cleaning campaign is the first such initiative supported by KPC, and falls within the framework of the corporation's efforts to raise environmental awareness among all social groups. By allowing the participation of children in the cleaning campaign, KPC aims at implanting the right social values in the children's minds and raising their awareness of the importance of preserving the environment.
The campaign also included cleaning the Kuwaiti islands of Kubbar, Qaruh and Um Al Maradem with the participation of volunteer divers.

Future generations
Sponsoring the 'Be Ambitious' Project: KPC plays an active role in supporting educational programmes aimed at training young Kuwaiti people and honing their skills through practical experience. It sponsored the 'Be Ambitious' project, organised by the National Union of Kuwaiti Students at Kuwait University. The maiden project provided on the job training opportunities and summer jobs for all its participants as a preparatory step for their professional careers. Participants were given work placements in private sector companies and establishments in the fields that were relevant to their specialisations. At the end of the exercise, every student received a financial reward and a certificate of experience.

Summer student employment project
KPC also sponsored a summer programme organised by the Touristic Enterprises Company to employ high school students. This sponsorship was in line with the corporation's earnest desire to support all social activities that serve Kuwaiti society, and help young Kuwaitis occupy their free time with constructive work. The corporation believes that investing in the young people of Kuwait, the real wealth of the country, is a real investment that boosts and develops the students' capabilities, skills and sense of responsibility in a practical and professional manner alongside the academic education they receive at school.

Oil lectures for students
Pursuant to its mission of raising awareness of the Kuwaiti oil industry, KPC organised a series of intensive lectures for Kuwait University students on the nature and the role of the corporation in the management of the oil sector activities through its subsidiary oil companies.
The lectures also included a detailed explanation of the corporation's goals and introductions to its business, to its subsidiaries and to the activities undertaken by the corporation and their importance as the vital mainstay of the national economy. The lectures focused on the corporation's vital social role in terms of its sponsoring of several activities and events which include several summer training programmes for students and its contribution to the raising of a generation aware of the importance of KPC and the oil sector and able to face future challenges.

Raising children's oil awareness
In order to promote the oil culture among Kuwaiti youth and reinforce the social bonds among the children of the corporation's employees, the Department of Public Relations organized a visit to the Kuwait Oil Company exhibition in Ahmadi.
The trip included the showing of a documentary film about the widespread destruction and barbaric acts committed during the Iraqi invasion and occupation of Kuwait, in particular, the torching of the oil wells, and included scenes of the heroic acts of the Kuwaiti teams that brought the fires under control.
Afterwards, the children visited the exhibition that uses a variety of pictures and working models to illustrate the process of oil formation and extraction and the equipment used in extinguishing the oil well fires. The exhibition
Also contained pictures of the most important visits by eminent personalities and heads of states to this creative exhibition.

Supporting annual diving trip
The corporation annually sponsors a diving trip, organised by the Sea Sports Club under the auspices of Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, to commemorate the traditional occupations of the Kuwaiti ancestors.
The corporation's support for the diving trip is in line with the wish of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait to celebrate Kuwait's marine heritage, commemorate the ancestors and to renew national pride in all their sacrifices and contributions. This event reinforces the spirit of belonging and the sense of loyalty to this precious country.
The diving trip also strengthens the strong bond linking the present young generation to the glorious heritage of this country, with all its hard times and difficulties, so that the young people will learn lessons, values and virtues from the past and use them along their life's journey.
The youngsters will also learn toleration, patience and how to rely only on themselves and on God Almighty.
They will reinforce their sense of loyalty towards this country and increase their knowledge of the historical bonds that link them to the young people of the other GCC member states.
