Stable and robust technology, such as a new technology from three leading IT producers known as Linear Tape Open (LTO storage, is an absolute requirement for all Saudi Aramco IT applications and complex reservoirs and seismic data are no exceptions.

LTO, an ‘open’ tape architecture developed by a consortium of three world-class storage producers, IBM, Hewlett-Packard Corporation and Seagate Corporation, is a quantum leap forward in the processing of massive amounts of data.
LTO products are the culmination of this industry initiative to create an open industry-standard format for digital tape.  LTO technology is an open format technology, which means that users will have multiple sources of product and media. The “open” nature of LTO technology also provides a means of enabling compatibility between different vendors’ offerings.  The new technology allows customers to use tapes interchangeably from any LTO manufacturer whilst the Ultrium family provides a new level of capacity, performance, scalability and reliability in the network server and midrange marketplace.
IBM Ultrium drives share best-of-breed technology with advanced multi-track recording capabilities, magneto-resistive (MR) head and servo technologies, and high recording densities. Error correction code (ECC) function helps provide data integrity.
Industry acceptance of the Linear Tape-Open standard has been excellent with over 29 companies already signed to the Ultrium format license agreements for all the different license types.  IBM LTO Ultrium 2 builds on the legacy of over 130,000 IBM Ultrium 1 drives already shipped.
With high capacity, performance and reliability, LTO helps bring investment protection to critical business process.  The LTO product family brings the power of these innovations together in IBM technology.
