Global engineering, management and construction service provider Kvaerner is currently bidding for a number of projects in the Middle East region with a focus on offshore pipelines, according to the company.

Kvaerner has tendered for the FEED for the Dolphin Midstream Project, which comprises the offshore pipeline, about 370 km in length, originating from Ras Laffan (Qatar) and terminating at two locations in the UAE at Taweelah and Jebel Ali, via a riser platform located near Jebel Ali.

Operating worldwide from offices in Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, India and the US, Kvaerner provides total technological solutions to a wide range of industries with key emphasis on upstream oil and gas projects offshore and onshore.

For the oil and gas sector, Kvaerner services ranges from Research & Development, feasibility studies, conceptual design, front end engineering design (FEED), procurement and project management.

The Kvaerner Oil & Gas (O & G) and Kvaerner Engineering and Construction (E & C) Divisions possess special expertise in designing offshore installations, onshore oil and gas plants and offshore pipelines.

Kvaerner has designed some of the largest offshore structures in the North Sea and some offshore pipelines with the most technological challenges.

For example, Kvaerner was responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) and installation of the world's largest semi-submersible gas production floater, Asgard B, for Norway's Statoil. It is now installed in the North Sea with a topside weight of 42,000 tonnes, producing 38 million standard cu m of rich gas per day, 15,000 standard cu m of condensate and 6,500 standard cu m of partly stabilised oil.

In the Asia Pacific region, an EPC contract for engineering and installing bundled pipelines was commissioned in Singapore in August/September 2000.

Consisting of eight pipelines and two electric cables between Bokum and Jurong Islands for Shell Eastern Petroleum Limited (SEPL), the project was seen as a major technological achievement for the company.

In the Middle East, Kvaerner has been fairly active in providing services to a number of projects in the UAE, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Oman.

For Adnoc and its operating companies in the UAE, some of the projects successfully executed by Kvaerner include:

  • Feasibility study of gas injection facilities in for Upper & Lower Zakum for Zadco.

  • FEED package for the upgrade of Bu Hasa process facilities to handle increased water production for Adco.

  • Detailed design and engineering, procurement, construction management and site supervision for 13 additional infield pipelines and associated risers ranging from 6" to 14" in diameter for Zadco.

  • FEED for the Adnoc Offshore Khuff Gas Development Project, including the planned onshore gas treatment facilities to be located in Taweelah.

  • Project management services for Adma-Opco's Crestal Gas Injection Project which is currently under implementation;

  • Basic design, detailed engineering and preparations of call for tender (CFT) document for an 18" Condensate Pipeline Replacement project (Adma-Opco).

In addition, Kvaerner also provided key support to Adma-Opco in carrying out a conceptual study for Umm Shaif Gas Injection Facilities project early last year.

Kvaerner is currently providing engineering and procurement services for an offshore gas gathering pipeline system and terminal in Nigeria.

Like many global corporations, Kvaerner has recently witnessed some furore within its organisational structure and financial standing.

However, Kvaerner says it has stood firm in its resolve to remain where it is and it used to be - an eminent global player and first class provider of services to the oil and gas industry.

With its latest lease of life, Kvaerner says it has renewed its dedication to provide excellent, unsurpassed quality services to its clients.
