The GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) and Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity held talks in Bahrain to finalise preparations for an electricity interconnection linking southern Iraq to the Gulf grid, enhancing regional power stability.

Expected to be operational in H1 2026, the project enables power exports from GCC countries to Iraq and supports competitive electricity markets.

The initiative follows GCCIA’s strategic amendments with EPRI and a $500-million financing deal with Sohar Bank for a 530-km, 400-kV line connecting the UAE’s Al Sila station with Oman’s Ibri station, boosting regional energy security and trade.
