Saudi Arabia is emerging as a key player in the global shale oil and gas sector, with plans to boost gas production by 60 per cent from 2021 to 2030, according to GlobalData’s report Emerging Oil and Gas Shale Plays.

While the US still dominates with over 80 per cent of 2024 output, new shale activity is reshaping the global landscape.

Canada, holding the second-largest recoverable reserves, continues to expand output using advanced US technologies.

Argentina’s Vaca Muerta formation is gaining prominence through strategic investment and rising exports, while China has accelerated shale exploration to enhance energy security.

The report said the shale industry’s future will depend on innovation, efficiency, and environmental responsibility, enabling countries to secure resilience and competitiveness in a transitioning energy market.
