New IT system allows remote access

The IT Division of Adgas has introduced “Al Tawasul Service” for Adgas Management to better facilitate their remote access to IT systems from anywhere.

Al Tawasul Service has been introduced to Adgas general management and division managers, and eventually it will be introduced to all Adgas remote users. This service replaces the existing remote access service that is currently used by remote users.
Remote users have always appreciated the remote access service facility provided to them by the IT Division (ITD); but, at the same time, they were frustrated with its limitations in the performance and accessibility of the service.
The old remote access service could only be accessed with dial-up via Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) or Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).
Most remote users use PSTN or phone lines that have low bandwidth-56Kbps; and, some remote users use ISDN lines which can offer more than twice the bandwidth of PSTN-128Kbps; but in both cases the bandwidth is extremely low when compared to the office connection bandwidth- I00Mbps that users are used to when they are at the office.
Considering that the office connection offers about 1,700 times the bandwidth of PSTN and about 700 times the bandwidth of ISDN, we can understand users frustration with the old remote access service.
The old remote access service is accessible from any place with a phone line; but remote users would still be required to carry with them the Adgas Note-Book with the proper software and configuration. In addition, remote users that are outside the country would have to make expensive international calls to connect to Adgas.
A1 Tawasul Service uses Terminal Server Technology to compensate for the low bandwidth of remote connections and significantly enhance performance of the service.
Remote access users connect to a terminal server that does all processing and transmits screen updates back to the remote users; it is almost like extending the keyboard, mouse and monitor of an office PC to a remote user, and allowing the remote user to enjoy performance almost equal to that at the office.
Furthermore, all the required software clients are installed on the server; thus, ensuring accessibility of the required applications from anywhere.
Moreover, AI Tawasul Service allows remote users to connect via the Internet without compromising the Adgas network security by using Security Tokens and RADIUS Authentication.
Additionally, Al Tawasul Service utilises the new Secure Sockets Layer Virtual Privet Network (SSL VPN) Technology to establish secure session for remote user without the need for client VPN software.
“Al Tawasul Service” currently supports Microsoft office applications including Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, outlook mail and the Internet explorer; and it is planned to support other applications such as SAP/R3, AEIMS, etc.
