The company’s Roads Division has successfully completed more than 200 km of road works in the country which includes construction of various bridges, underpasses, camel crossing, sub station, street lighting, water distribution, drainage, TSE works, etc including connected civil and other electromechanical works.
The Roads Division started working in Ras Laffan Industrial City in 1999 with the construction of the 13 km dual carriageway between Umbarka Roundabout to Ras Laffan Main Gate. This involved massive earth work quantity of approximately 3.3 million cubic metres, which was completed in a record time of less than six months. The major landmark of the project is:
Galfar achieved Milestone No 1, two weeks ahead of schedule which enabled Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to travel on the newly built asphalt road for the inauguration ceremony at Ras Laffan Industrial City on October 23, 1999.
This was the first time that a road was built to very high quality standards and has been widely appreciated by all engineering professionals in Qatar and even after nine years, no maintenance is warranted in spite of considerable increase in the volume of traffic and load on this road.
Besides, the 30m tall, meticulously built unique monument at Umbarka Roundabout, with structural steel, is the standing testimony to the company’s quality of work.
It may be noteworthy to record that the 40mm wearing course on the shoulder, laid directly over subbase, is being used widely by heavy vehicles as a regular track and has withstood all heavy loads, even after nine years, without maintenance. The contract value of this job was QR41,700,000 and contract duration was 18 months.
The second job done by Galfar at Ras Laffan was the Plot Development within Ras Laffan Industrial City, for an amount of QR56 million with the duration of 18 months.
This job was completed within a record time without any major issues. In fact, the graded area and unlined channels have undergone more than four seasons of rains and floods and is still stable.
Currently, the company is doing one major job GTC04/183/ED, Engineering, Procurement and Construction of new roads and extension of existing roads at Ras Laffan, connecting Hammed Street and the Port, and extension of Khalifa Road to Dana Street, for an estimate value of QR190 million. This job will be completed shortly.
The major task in this project is the construction of a major bridge across the running Water Channel without disturbing flow in the Channel and meeting the environmental obligations of the RLC. The company also built French drains, all along the road, for surface water drainage.
The company is also currently working on the recently awarded job GTC06/160/ED EPIC for Support Services Area Phase1, Site Development at New West Side of Ras Laffan (incorporating Landscaping Phase1/Part2), through which the New Industrial Area is being developed towards northwest of the present industrial city, which is an expansion to the current facilities.
Approximate area of the Plot Development is 1,200,000 sq m. In addition to that the company is beautifying the entire Ras Laffan Avenue, Tariq Street, Ayesha Street, etc, under the landscaping contract. The project is planned for completion by December, 2007, during which period the entire Ras Laffan Avenue will have been beautifully landscaped.
Recently Galfar was awarded with a project for providing Integrated Modern Security System which will provide an additional facelift to the main entrance of the Ras Laffan Industrial City. The project value is approximately QR115,000,000 with a duration of 15 months.
The company has also completed a project for Fluor Middle East Limited, for their RasGas Expansion Plant, amounting to approximately QR15,000,000.
Currently, the company is executing more than QR400 million worth road projects with QP in Mesaieed and Ras Laffan, comprising of major bridges, drainage works, waterworks, landscaping and irrigation, substations, etc.
In July, 2006, the company completed one major road project Umm BabSalwa Road.
The scope of work was 37 km of two Lane Dual Carriageway, (i e 74 km) with 11 underpasses and one bridge.
Besides this, the company has completed six different projects for the Public Works Authority (PWA) in the year 20022003. It also participated in many of the major tenders of PWA, viz Zakrit Sahaniya, Ministry of Energy projects and various internal roads during the year 2005/2006.
The company’s Electrical Division has carried out prestigious jobs for QP, Kahramaa and various other clients including private parties. It has successfully completed a major 11kV Substation in Mesaieed including changeover and recommissioning of large shipping pumps rated at 2200HP.
The company has to its credit street lighting jobs exceeding 250 km of road length, with associated 11kV and 415V networks.
The calloff contract for Kahramaa involves strengthening of the existing 11kV and 415V distribution networks all over the country.
The company is also one of the preferred contractors for the various private establishments when it comes to the connection of 11 kV network to the various commercial and residential establishments which are mushrooming in Doha and the neighbouring areas.
Apart from the above, the company is currently executing:
• New 33/11kV power distribution substation at Halul. The job involves all civil works, supplying, installing and commissioning of all electrical equipment, all associated electromechanical works and hooking up to the existing network at 33kV level;
• New 33 kV overhead line from Umm Bab to Salwa (37 km). The job involves topping power at 33kV level from the 132/33kV substation of Kahramaa, constructing a new 33kV switching station and a 33kV OHL with 20 numbers of pole mounted transformers mounted along the route. It also involves powering up the street lighting for the entire length of the road;
• Instrumentation and plant electrification works for the various oil and gas projects currently running at Mesaieed and Dukhan (eight tanks and associated piping and other works). The job involves modification to existing plant facilities like DDS, electrical distribution system, cathodic protection, plant lighting, cabling, etc.
The company’s Oil and Gas Division has successfully completed the critical work at Dukhan Consolidated Facilities Upgrade Project, with 45,000 inch diametre welding on heavy wall pipe and shut down related to the above job was carried out at Jaleh and Fahahil Station. Field instruments numbering more than 2,000 and substation works associated to the above project were also carried out with least disturbance to the existing operations;
• The company is currently executing tank projects (eight) at Mesaieed and Dukhan of sizes (varying from diameters of 16m to 72m and height of 14m to 18m; and
• EPIC of route survey, design, construction, installation and hookup of oil flowlines, gas lift flowlines snd PWI spurlines at Dukhan. This contract is for three years and for the last seven years it has been done continuously by the company. The project contract value is approximately QR100 million.
